Luciano Sandrone Description

Luciano Sandrone is one of the leading producers in Barolo. Since their first harvest in 1978, Luciano and his brother Luca have devoted tremendous effort toward cultivating the finest fruit in their vineyards in the best parts of Langhe and Roero. Luciano began making small quantities of his own wine in the garage of his parents’ home, refining his ideas about how to make a wine of distinction and high quality that respected the traditions of the Barolo while incorporating many of the technological innovations of the day. Vineyard practices include a minimum of two green harvests per vintage. Minimal quantities of Bordeaux mixture and sulfur (as allowed per organic practices) are used to combat mold and fungus. The winery generally follows organic farming but has chosen not to seek certification. Canopy management is the same at every vineyard and defoliation is on the west side of the plant for maximum afternoon sun. Fertilization is every 4-6 years with composted manure from dairy cows only. Their yields are extremely low. The wines undergo short maceration periods, the use of new oak is limited in the maturation process. The wines are elegant, attractive and easy to appreciate from their first years in bottle, but they have no less power and structure than traditional Barolos. Luciano has never lost track of the things that brought him his initial success - wines of integrity, purity and deep expression, made with passion and honesty to provide great drinking pleasure.

Wine Spectator: 94 Points

With a core of cherry flavors and assertive tannins, this Barolo is right out of central casting. Accents of mint, tar, tobacco and tea add dimension. The finish is linear and firm. Fine acidity keeps this focused and long. Best from 2020 through 2035. 220 cases imported. — BS

Wine Advocate: 94 Points

The 2012 Barolo Cannubi Boschis is a solid and tighter wine compared to the 2012 Le Vigne. Having said that, it veers close to being too austere and hard-bodied, especially at this young stage of its life. Of Sandrone's two new Barolo releases, this wine definitely needs more time to evolve and soften with extra years of bottle aging. The tannins are more evident and the wine's firm backbone acts to support dark fruit flavors with distant accents of spice, licorice and tobacco.

Vinous: 94 Points

The 2012 Barolo Cannubi Boschis opens with beguiling aromatics redolent of crushed rose petal, spices, mint and new leather. Wonderfully layered and nuanced, especially for the year, the 2012 offers good freshness to match its inviting, supple fruit. I would prefer to drink it sooner rather than later, while its alluring, open-knit personality is on full display. In 2012, the fruit tends towards the redder end of spectrum, unusual for Cannubi Boschis, which usually tends towards darker shades of expression. The 2012 is perfumed, lithe and super-classy from start to finish.
