Etienne Grivot succeeded his father, Jean, in 1987, and today presides over 15 hectares of vines spread accross Nuits, Vosne, Vougeot and Echézeaux. This is one of the modern-day, benchmark Burgundian domaines. The estate’s densely-planted old vines (the average age is 40 years old) produce naturally-low yields and, together with Etienne’s organic approach to viticulture and sensible winemaking, result in vivid, pure, very well-balanced Burgundies. The wines are much more softly extracted than when Etienne first started, the winemaking is incredibly flexible, depending on the vintage, but usually only 5% of stalks are retained, and rarely more than a third of the barrels are new. A reference point for good Burgundy.
A fragrant mix of sandalwood, vanilla, toast and sweet cherry aromas and flavors. Firms up as the plump tannins take over, yet lingers with plenty of spice notes on the finish. Best from 2022 through 2037. 97 cases imported. –BS
Full, bright red. Aromas of dark cherry, licorice and leather are lifted by a floral note. Compellingly silky, supple and rich, but with its captivating sweetness nicely leavened by slightly medicinal menthol and mineral notes. The whiplash of a finish features seamless, noble tannins and outstanding breadth, the flavors building slowly and inexorably. An essence of Nuits-Saint-George with Vosne-side perfume.
A distinctly earthy nose of red currant and spice elements is set off by a subtle oak influence. There is superb richness to the voluptuous medium weight plus flavors that possess a highly seductive texture thanks to the abundant dry extract that imparts a sappy mouthfeel and serves to mostly buffer the very firm tannic spine on the strikingly persistent finish. If this can add depth over the next 12 to 15 years, it might even exceed my already high rating! Note that Boudots is a chameleon-like terroir that can be either Nuits or Vosne in basic character; in 2015, it's more Vosne than Nuits.
The 2015 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots has an opulent, effervescent bouquet with copious red cherries, wild strawberry, marmalade and hints of allspice that all make for a very complex and quite riveting experience. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet candied entry, like the aromatics, forward and opulent in style with a rich, dense, spicy finish that feels as much Vosne-Romanée as Nuits Saint-Georges. It will need several years in bottle, but it should be a hell of a lot of fun once ready.
